The Centre for Cultural Management (CCM) was established at the University of Waterloo in 1989 with founding support from the Samuel and Saidye Bronfman Family Foundation, to address the critical need for improved cultural leadership in Canada.
Cultural Management Specialization (CMS)
The Faculty of Arts offers students the opportunity for academic and practical training in Cultural Management as an integral part of their Honours Arts and Business Co-op academic plan. The Cultural Management Specialization provides students with the possibility of a broadly-based education in the liberal arts, combined with courses in cultural management, economics, accounting, communications, and computing. Students in Cultural Management complete four (of six) work terms in performing and visual arts organizations throughout Canada, working in the areas of management, fundraising, and marketing.
Honours Arts and Business Co-op students apply for admission to the Cultural Management Specialization during their 2A academic term (following completion of 1A and 1B, having declared an Honours Major and normally having completed their first Arts and Business Co-op work term).
Cultural Management Specialization students complete the required courses for the Honours Arts and Business Co-op academic plan (Year 1A, 1B, and 2A), the Honours Arts Major academic plan, and the required courses for the Cultural Management Specialization.
It should be stressed that only students in Honours Arts and Business Co-op are eligible for the Cultural Management Specialization.
The Centre for Cultural Management offers a series of online professional development courses leading to Certificates of Completion and Specialist Diplomas for arts and heritage managers through manageculture.com. The courses are intended for administrative staff and managers of cultural organizations who are interested in enhancing their skills while they are working. As well, the courses will be of special interest to mid-career managers who may be moving into a new area of management and want to upgrade their knowledge in that area. The content of the courses is broadly-based, dealing with principles of management that apply to all areas of arts and heritage.
There are 25 courses in all, covering a wide range of management responsibilities in a variety of areas including: board development; career management; cultural tourism; strategic and business planning; fundraising and planned giving; human resources management; marketing; media relations and volunteer management.
The registration fee of $125 per course will lead to a Certificate of Completion.
Specialist Diplomas are currently offered in two areas (Revenue Generation/Fundraising and Leadership) and are awarded on the basis of demonstrated competency in five related courses. The registration fee for Specialist Diplomas is $995.
Technology in the Arts Conference
On May 9 & 10, 2008, CCM and the Centre for Arts Management and Technology (CAMT) at Carnegie Mellon University co-hosted the first Canadian Technology in the Arts Conference. It attracted 200 participants from coast to coast in Canada over the two days. Given the very positive response, CCM’s plans include a second conference in May 2009.
Municipal Cultural Planning Partnership (MCPP)
Creativity and culture build local economies. Across Ontario municipalities are turning to municipal cultural planning (MCP) to support culture-led economic and community development. MCP is a tool for identifying what is unique about a community and using it for economic prosperity and improved quality of life.
CCM has played a key leadership role in the founding and development of MCPP. In addition to providing secretariat functions since 2004, Bill Poole served as Chair from 2005 to 2008 and now has assumed the role of ‘Executive Director’.
